Drinking from a Saucer
by George McPhee
I have never made a fortune, and it's probaby too late now.
I don't worry about that much, I'm happy anyhow.
As I go along life's journey, reaping more than I have sowed,
I'm drinking from a saucer, 'cause my cup has overflowed.
I don't have lots of riches, and sometimes the going is tough.
I have a family that loves me, and that is quite enough.
I thank God for his blessings and his mercies he's bestowed.
I'm drinking from a saucer, 'cause my cup has overflowed.
I remember times when things went wrong, my faith got a little thin.
Then all at once the dark clouds broke, and the sun peeked through again.
Lord, please help me not to gripe about the tough rows I have hoed.
I'm drinking from a saucer, 'cause my cup has overflowed.
If God gives me strenght and courage when my way grows steep and tough,
I'll not ask for other blessings. I'm already blessed enough.
May I never be too busy to help another bear his load.
I'll keep drinking from a saucer, 'cause my cup has overflowed.
My mother, Janet, is one of the most wonderful people I know. She's always there to help anyone that needs her and would never turn her back on anyone.
In 1988, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33. She had a lumpectomy, radiation and chemotherapy and went into remission. However, in 1993, after almost 5 years, the cancer returned, this time on her backbone.
This time, the cancer was treated with radiation and oral drugs. This worked for a while to slow the spread, but only for so long. My mother had terminal breast cancer, which metasticized and spread to her liver. She passed away on Sunday, September 17 at about 5:30 pm.
My mother is a beautiful person, inside and out. It is a tragedy that she died so young. I hope that all women reading this will take the time to do self-examinations and have regularly-scheduled mamograms.
This was taken on a family vacation. It summarizes Mom's positive attitude even after bad news.
This is one of my mother's favorite prayers:
The Prayer of St. Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
